QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT OF LIFETIME CANCER RISK AMONG DENTAL MEDICAL PERSONNEL AT USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, SOKOTO, NIGERIA
Abstract
The increasing utilization of dental radiographic procedures has raised concerns about the potential long-term health impacts on dental medical personnel, particularly regarding cancer risk due to radiation exposure. This study conducted a comprehensive quarterly assessment of the lifetime cancer risk among dental professionals at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, Nigeria. Using advanced dosimetry techniques and standardized radiation monitoring protocols, we quantified the radiation exposure levels experienced by these professionals. The results indicated that the average annual radiation dose received by the dental personnel was within the recommended safety limits. However, the cumulative exposure over a professional lifetime posed a statistically significant increase in cancer risk. This research underscores the need for enhanced safety protocols and regular monitoring to mitigate long-term health risks, providing critical insights for improving occupational safety standards in dental practice environments globally.
