EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS AND GAPS IN NIGERIA’S GOVERNMENT CYBERSECURITY POLICIES
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENHANCING CYBERSECURITY MEASURES
Abstract
In Nigeria, rapid digital transformation has significantly increased the exposure to cyber threats, posing serious risks to the nation’s economic stability and security. Despite various cybersecurity policies and initiatives, the effectiveness of these measures remains questionable due to numerous identified gaps. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Nigeria’s current cybersecurity policies, identifies their weaknesses, and proposes actionable recommendations to address these deficiencies. Utilizing a qualitative documentary analyses, the research highlights the critical gaps in the legislative and regulatory framework, inadequate cybersecurity awareness and training, corruption, and insufficient infrastructure. It also underscores the challenges related to public-private sector collaboration and data protection. The findings indicate that while Nigeria has made strides in developing cybersecurity measures, significant improvements are necessary to enhance resilience against evolving cyber threats. Recommendations include updating legislative frameworks to cover emerging threats, increasing public awareness and training programs, improving incident response mechanisms, and fostering stronger public-private partnerships. By addressing these gaps, Nigeria can strengthen its cybersecurity posture and better safeguard its digital assets.
