IMPACT OF UTILIZATION OF TEACHING RESOURCES ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF UBE STUDENTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN TARABA STATE

Abstract

This study examined the impact of utilization of teaching resources on academic achievement of UBE students in social studies in Taraba State. The study aimed at establishing the extent at which utilization of teaching resources in social studies class impact on students’ academic achievement across UBE schools in the study area. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, three (3) research questions and three (3) hypotheses guided the study. It was a descriptive research design and multistage sampling technique as well as Krejcie and Morgan sample size table of determination were used to select 377 respondents. Two (2) instruments: researcher-developed questionnaire and students’ academic achievement were used for data collection. Following adequate procedures for face and content validity of the instruments, reliability coefficient for the instrument stood at .89 using Cronbach’s Alpha analysis. The data collected from field were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviations to answer research questions while Pearson Product of Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study revealed that utilization of teaching resources significantly impacts academic achievement of UBE students in social studies; and that utilization of teaching resources significantly impacts academic achievement of UBE students in favour of male gender; as well as utilization of teaching resources significantly impacts academic achievement of UBE students in favour of urban location. Therefore, it was concluded that there is significant impact of utilization of teaching resources on academic achievement of UBE students in social studies class in the study area. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among others that, social studies teachers should be trained and encouraged to use teaching resources when delivering social studies lessons so as to improve on academic achievement of students.
