GENDER BIAS AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS MATHEMATICS TEACHERS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING MATHEMATICS IN NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA

Abstract

Teachers give more attention to male students than female students. The bias is often subtle and unintentional, but its result is harmful. The teacher behaviours, actions towards students in teaching and learning mathematics and are embedded with bias These actions against female students limiting them from the choice of careers that are mathematics related. The teacher exhibits gender bias because he/she controls what happens and at the same time determine what should be done in the classroom These differential treatments has detriment effects on the girls’selfesteem, and self-confidence in mathematics performance.This study examined the extent of gender bias in teaching and learning mathematics among Senior secondary Schools Mathematics Teachers in North Central Nigeria based on mathematics classroom observations, questionnaire and interview. The observations lasted fora complete  term one year for three times using a modified version of  INTERSECT for 45 minutes each A sample of 315 respondents comprised of 165(52.4%) male and 150 (47.6% female  students respectively and a sample of 6 mathematics teachers which comprised 3 males and three 3 females respectively were selected using simple random sampling techniques from Senior Secondary Schools in North Central Nigeria  The six mathematics teachers were possessively selected for the interview processes. Sequential Explanatory Mixed Method Research Design was adopted. The research instruments in this study was structured questionnaires, classrooms observations, and interviews. Chi-Square Test Statistic, Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis was used to analyse the quantitative research questions, while Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative research questions of the study. The result indicates there is significant different of male and female teachers direct four categories of interactions more towards male students than female students. Five important  strategies were identified and there themes were found to reduce gender bis in teaching and learning mathematics
