TOWARDS IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES FOR QUALITY BASIC EDUCATION, IMPLICATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
A PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH
Abstract
Education is an important key for achieving sustainable national development. For any nation to achieve her vision, the quality of her basic education needs to be improved with basic facilities for instructional delivery. Therefore, this article provides an insight into various efforts since the implementation of Universal Basic Education in Nigeria. However, the quality and standards in education at all levels is achieved through the creation of durable atmosphere for teaching and learning as a major area of concerned for every democratic nation. It seems that, in Nigeria, Basic Education programs and activities in schools lack basic facilities for teaching and learning such as basic nine years curriculum materials in especially core-subjects, lack of furniture, library, laboratory equipment, lack of teachers, poor school surrounding and poor management and control of scarce educational facilities. Basic facilities promote competencies which serve as the key to sustainable development. Therefore, the paper suggested ways forward among other government should set out a new committee that would manage basic education program nationwide.
