NAVIGATING THE LABYRINTH OF TIME
A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF HISTORICAL REFLECTIONS IN TOYIN SHITTU’S POETRY
Abstract
This research delves into Toyin Shittu's poetry, particularly his collection Naija Blues to unravel the intricate relationship between linguistic devices and historical reflections in the context of Nigeria's past. Focusing on metaphors, irony, personification, and symbolism, the study conducts a meticulous exploration of three key poems, "Yesterday," "Today," and "Tomorrow." Through a qualitative research design, the findings reveal that Shittu's deliberate use of metaphors encapsulates Nigeria's struggles and progress, while irony challenges simplistic narratives. Personification breathes life into abstract concepts, intensifying emotional resonance, and symbolism transforms objects into profound vessels of meaning. In conclusion, Shittu's poetry, analysed through linguistic devices, offers a nuanced understanding of Nigeria's historical narrative, contributing significantly to the intersection of language, literature, and history in Nigerian poetry.
