PARTY POLITICS AND INTERPLAY OF GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA: AN EXAMINATION OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN DELTA STATE (2007–2023)
Abstract
This article provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges faced by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State between 2007 and 2023. Despite its long-standing influence in the state's politics, the PDP has experienced significant internal and external challenges that have impacted its political stability and electoral fortunes. The major challenges discussed include internal factionalism, leadership crises, and defections, which weakened the party's cohesion and electoral performance. Corruption allegations and governance missteps also tarnished the party’s image, affecting its relationship with the electorate. Additionally, the rise of opposition parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), added pressure, leading to a more competitive political environment in Delta State. The article examines how the PDP navigated these challenges and the implications for its continued dominance in the state, with a focus on the consequences for democratic processes and governance in Nigeria.
